Drama Curriculum
Speech and Drama are an essential part of the students’ cultural education at Philosophy Day. Children love to act and enjoy exploring their great gift of speech. Creative drama promotes listening and speaking skills, and provides opportunities for creative expression and training in speaking, acting and moving. Children read and learn passages from a great wealth of poetry and literature which challenges and elevates them, while enjoying the magic of acting and singing in a large group.
The materials and skills vary according to the age group, but every grade’s work culminates in a school-wide drama production, so that children are aware from an early age of the steps involved in the whole creative process. From the Pre-school Division to the Lower School, children perform each year in a play and musical concerts. The works of Shakespeare provide a central core to drama activities and during their time at PDS, all children will be exposed to a number of plays.
Students gain confidence in their abilities and experience the pleasure of cooperative participation in final productions. The drama program encourages extensive collaboration across the curriculum, integrating the arts and academic programs.
