Philosophy Day School offers a curriculum that grows with the child. It provides a seamless educational experience as the student progresses from Nursery and Pre-K through Kindergarten into the lower school grades At the heart of the curriculum, and running through each grade, is an appreciation that children develop at different rates and in different ways. Each child is met and addressed where they are individually as well as within their class and grade.
The materials and challenges they are given are matched to their ability to ensure success in overcoming them and to provide them with a true sense of joy and accomplishment. Learning is natural and we know that joy in learning is essential.
While learning is conducted in a nurturing and supportive environment, the instruction provided is rigorous, challenging and systematic. Philosophy Day School teachers hold high expectations that their students will strive to achieve. They support and encourage the children to develop their own intellectual, social, athletic, artistic, and musical gifts and they hold themselves responsible for their student’s growth. They are skilled in assessing their student’s strengths and areas of need.
They encourage the areas of strength and carefully design new ways to guide the student through their difficulties. Just as each child develops naturally with regard to their studies, so too is there a natural progression in the way they view themselves and interact with others.
Woven through our curriculum is an emphasis on the development of values and character. This can be as simple as learning to walk together in Nursery to upperclassmen visiting an earlier grade to help young students read a book. It progresses to having a full awareness of others and the qualities that are always valued in a human being: respect, generosity, kindness, cheerfulness, confidence and compassion. Our students love to come to school because they are constantly challenged, guided and loved – and, because this is so each day and every class
